Clampdown on Illegal Parking

Motorists who park illegally in Poole will be risking heavier penalties as a result of changes in parking regulations.

From today, a new team of Borough of Poole wardens are patrolling the roads and car parks in a bid to relieve congestion and make Poole’s streets safer. The wardens will be clearly recognisable in navy blue uniforms including caps with Borough of Poole branding. They will be equipped with hand held computers to instantly record details of offending motorists.

The introduction of decriminalised parking means that responsibility has shifted from the Police to local authorities and it is no longer a criminal offence. As a result the Borough has authority to collect fines and to invest surplus income into parking and public transport priorities within the town.

Disabled drivers have been particularly affected by abuse of the disabled parking bays by able bodied drivers, limiting spaces for blue badge holders to use. Cllr Jane James, Executive Spokesperson for Care, said: "Parking on pavements can be a real hazard for people with poor sight or for those using wheelchairs. Our group has been pressing for better enforcement of the regulations for years, I am sure these new arrangements will be a big help to us."

Violation of the parking regulations will result in a fixed penalty charge of £60 which can be reduced to £30 for prompt payment. Richard Hein, Parking Manager, said: "Although the new rules give us clear responsibility, my team will be firm but fair in their new roles. Advisory leaflets are being distributed to local businesses and on motorists’ windscreens to warn them of the changes and how they could be affected."
