To celebrate national Bike Week
, the Borough of Poole is organising a Family Bike Ride on Saturday 24 June, from Baiter Park (the slipway car park at Labrador Drive) to Upton Country Park. The ride, which is about 4 miles long, will start at 10.00am and will be accompanied by marshals.
Bike Week
runs from 17 – 25 June and is a national initiative aimed at getting more people cycling more often. As part of that celebration a number of fun cycling events are also being held at some of the Borough’s First Schools to help improve children’s cycling and road safety skills and to promote cycling as a healthy and enjoyable activity.
The Council is also encouraging its staff to cycle to work during the week and take part in the inter-service unit challenge to see which service unit can clock up the most commuter miles.
Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy said: " Cycling is a great way of keeping fit and healthy whilst at the same time has a positive effect on the environment and helps to reduce congestion on the road. For all those reasons we have been actively introducing a number of cycle ways across the Borough to encourage more people to swap their four wheels for two".
Sally Funnell, Cycling Officer at the Borough of Poole said: “Overall we have seen the number of pupils cycling to school increase in Poole and it is great to see the children’s enthusiasm towards events such as this Family Cycle Ride. We look forward to organising similar cycling activities in the future.”
