Georgina Butt recently became the fourth member to be elected to represent young people in Poole as a Member of United Kingdom Youth Parliament (MYP). ![]()
It was a close run contest between all 17 candidates, but Georgina,15, who attends St Edward’s School and is a committed member of Poole Youth Forum, was victorious.
On becoming Poole’s new MYP, Georgina said: "I was really excited about standing, but it was a very nerve-racking thing to do. The whole evening was really fun, we were asked to design T-shirts explaining our manifesto and deliver our speeches - everyone who spoke did really well.”
“As MYP my aim is to listen to the views and concerns of others and make sure the decision makers listen to us and understand how we feel as young people. I will work hard to ensure they have a positive attitude towards all of us.”
“I will be the voice of every young person in Poole and make sure our issues are heard. I am very excited about the year ahead of me and I cannot wait to begin working with the Youth Parliament.”
Sophie Bradfield, 16, the outgoing MYP was re-elected as deputy MYP. She will act as deputy to Georgina and support her role.
Peter Cooper, Senior Youth Worker, Borough of Poole, said: “We had a great night -the atmosphere was electric. Each of the 17 candidates created a manifesto as part of a three minute speech to become the next MYP or Deputy. Everyone was impressed by the maturity of all the candidates and the hard work that had gone into preparing for the election.”
Cllr Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: “All the candidates had support from local elected members and as well as their peers and friends. Young people have shown yet again, that given opportunities that challenge them, they will rise to the occasion. The Youth Parliament and Youth Forum give Poole's new generation an opportunity to be fully involved in the Town's progress. I look forward to working with Georgina."
