23 Jun 04Poole's First Citizenship Ceremony
The Borough of Poole is hosting its first ever Citizenship Ceremony in the Council Chamber of 29 June 2004 at 10am.
The ceremony celebrates the significance of becoming a British Citizen and welcomes the new citizen into his or her community. They are required to swear or affirm an oath of allegiance to the Queen and make a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom.
The ceremony starts with a welcome by Superintendent Registrar Christine Stainton and will be followed by a short speech from the Mayor Les Burden and Sheriff Lou Knight. The prospective citizens then repeat the oath and pledge back to the Superintendent Registrar before being presented with a gift from the Mayor and certificate from the Sheriff. The citizen is then invited to sign the register.
A total of three people will be sworn in as British Citizens at the first Citizenship Ceremony.
Mayor Les Burden, Borough of Poole, said: “This is a proud and joyous occasion to welcome and celebrate local people become citizens of the United Kingdom. I feel privileged and honoured to take part in this, our first Citizenship Ceremony here in Poole.”
