£34million boost to affordable housing

£34million is to be invested in affordable housing in Poole over the next two years.

The Affordable Housing Development Programme will deliver in 286 new affordable homes in Poole. This will include 191 units of affordable rented and 95 units of affordable low cost home ownership units of accommodation available to people on the housing register.  The scheme is capable of providing housing for up to 746 people. 

This builds on the success of the last two years, which has seen the completion of 369 units of affordable housing in Poole, with a further 135 to come.

The Housing Corporation , the Government body that funds affordable housing development,  will provide £15million with the Borough itself funding £1.5m. The remainder of the cost of the development will be met by Registered Social Landlords and contributions made by developers.

Councillor Mike White, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “The people of Poole have told us that the provision of affordable housing is one of their top priorities. In recent years we have smashed our targets for providing affordable housing and the increase in the provision has made a real difference to the lives of people allocated these homes.  I am pleased to see that success continuing, ensuring that people in Poole have access to decent, safe and affordable homes.”

Simon Hendey, Head of Housing and Community Services, said: “We know that many families and young people have difficulty in finding a home they can afford in Poole. The news of more rented and low cost housing will allow many more Poole people the opportunity to live in a decent affordable home of their choice.”

The Borough of Poole works closely with four housing associations to ensure high quality development and management of affordable housing in Poole. Swaythling Housing Society , Knightstone Housing Association , Western Challenge Housing Association and Raglan Housing Association will be delivering the majority of the new homes over the next few years.
