10 Dec 03Raising Community Safety Awareness in Poole
If you want to increase your awareness on important aspects of safety in the community then get down to the Dolphin Shopping Centre between 4pm - 9pm on Thursday 11 December 2003. Poole Crime and Disorder Partnership will be running its annual Community Safety Awareness event offering advice and information about community safety with a variety of stalls themed in a light-hearted but informative manner. Councillor Chris Bulteel, Chair of the Crime and Disorder Partnership, said: "Poole is very committed to informing the public on community safety issues and this event helps to raise awareness in a relaxed and interesting way. Whilst the issues covered at this event are to be taken seriously, if we can proactively put across positive messages in a light hearted manner, which the public will remember and take notice of, then we are taking steps in the right direction." Combating anti-social behaviour is a key priority for the Crime and Disorder Partnership in Poole, in line with Central Government objectives. The Borough will be carrying out a consultation exercise on the day around this issue in order to seek residents' views and perceptions and to feed the information into the next crime audit, due next year. All participants will be entered into a draw at the end of the evening with a chance to win Christmas goodies! Bhs, Marks and Spencer, Wilkinsons, Ottakars, Sainsburys and the Early Learning Centre have all very kindly donated to the draw. Simon Hendey, Head of Housing and Community Services, Borough of Poole, said: "With the Christmas season upon us we want to ensure that residents are well informed about community safety issues, particularly the effects of drink driving and drug use. With our special impairment glasses people will be able to see the effects and what happens when driving under the influence. The Partnership team will also be giving advice about vehicle security, domestic and distraction burglary and will be on hand to talk to residents about any fears they may have. It’s important to stress that community safety is not just about crime." Popular magician, Mr Merlin, will be on hand during the first half of the evening with Okey Dokey the Dragon to entertain the children. There is also a treat in store for those with thespian tendencies - pictures from the musical ‘Trickster’, aimed at raising awareness of bogus callers on the doorstep, will be on display. The show demonstrated how to successfully handle such situations and was arranged by the Borough of Poole, Dorset Police and the Police Partnership Trust. Bogus caller packs and other security devices will be also be available.
