30 Jul 04Poole's Street Market to Launch Entertainment.
550 years ago the King of England granted Poole a Thursday market - well, now it is back! To celebrate the historic occasion, the Street Market will be officially launched on Thursday 5th August with a traditional market ceremony. This includes 'testing of the ale', coordinated by the Blue Boar, where the public will have the opportunity to 'taste, test and toast' free ale to celebrate the market's official opening. The Mayor and Mayoress of Poole, Cllr Les Burden and Mrs Maryrose Burden, will officially declare the Street Market open on Thursday 5th August at 12.00pm. The Town Crier, Malcolm Squire, who will remind the crowd of their ancient rights and responsibilities.
On the launch day a new trader will be making an exclusive visit to the Poole High Street market between 10am and 4pm! 'Trotter's Independent Trader's' will be attending and crowds will be entertained by the antics of 'Del Boy' and 'Uncle Albert' who will display their latest potential money making project.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to listen to live music provided by an acoustic jazz band between 11am and 3pm.
Poole Town Centre Management is to host the town's first-ever major weekly street entertainment programme. The 'Street Market' entertainment will include a variety of live music and street performers and will take place every Thursday from 5th August to 2nd September between 10am and 4pm.
Poole Town Centre Manager, Helen Crawford, says; "We wanted to officially celebrate the special occasion of Poole reclaiming its market town status and have developed a five week programme of entertainment that is guaranteed to be a winner with families. We believe that in hosting a variety of regular entertainment in the High Street it really adds something special to a visit by creating a fantastic ambience. The launch timing has landed perfectly with the market now achieving a full capacity of traders."
The Street Market is based in the middle section of the High Street and trades between 8.30am and 5.00pm.
