Good And Getting Better

The Borough of Poole is ‘good’ at serving local people and is improving, according to a judgement by independent inspectors. \n

The result, announced today by the Audit Commission, is part of the second year of a national Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) scheme designed to help residents assess how well their Council is run and to help it to improve its performance.

Authorities across the country have been assessed on the quality of core services, how resources are used and the capacity to improve. These assessments are combined into an overall result placing each Council in one of five categories: excellent, good, fair, weak or poor.

Poole retained its score of ‘good’ this year and in addition, improved quite substantially in its use of resources, providing better than average services that are improving.

Cllr Brian Leverett, Leader of the Council, said: "Our commitment to improving the financial management of the Council has been reflected in our improved score for use of resources. Education for the second time has achieved an excellent rating, which is a top class result and demonstrates the exceptional work of our schools and teaching staff in spite of the limited resources and pressures they face this year."

John McBride, Chief Executive, said: "I want to congratulate all the staff and members who work tirelessly for the Council. I think we can be very pleased with the result and with the progress we have made in improving how the borough is run and how our services perform."

Launched last year, CPA benchmarked each of the 150 top-tier local authorities in England, a mix of county, metropolitan, unitary and London councils.
