Poole Museum Service gains Phase 2 Registration Status

Poole’s Waterfront and Scaplen’s Court Museums have been rewarded for the care and maintenance of collections and high quality staff by attaining Phase 2 status in respect of their applications for Museum registration.

To obtain Phase 2 registration status the Museum demonstrated to both ‘Re:source’ (The Council for Museums, Libraries & Archives) and The South West Museum Council that it met the required standards expected of museums for the care and maintenance of its collections. The standards, set on a national basis, cover the acquisition, care, use, maintenance, security and disposal of collections, visitor facilities and professional competence of staff. If a Museum is to receive public funding then it must be Registered under this scheme. Poole Museums were initially registered in 1991 under Phase 1 of the Scheme, this has now been superseded by more stringent requirements under Phase 2. The Registration Panel asked for the following to be noted about part of the Museums application for Registration:

"The Registration Panel would particularly like to commend your Acquisition and Disposal Policy for the thought that clearly went into its production, making it a working document that defines the practice of Poole Museums rather than an exercise to be undertaken in order to attain registration! Members of the panel suggest you should consider writing it up for the Museums Journal".

Clive Fisher, Museum Development Manager for Poole Museum Service said, "We are very pleased to hear of our success in obtaining Phase 2 Registration status, it demonstrates the professional capabilities and practices of our service and the high standards that we seek to achieve".
