Poole Pupils Learn Helmet Sense

School pupils in Poole will soon be learning the value of wearing a cycle helmet as part of a campaign for Brain Injury Awareness Week from 11-17 March.

Charity 'Headway Dorset' will be visiting Poole schools to promote the wearing of cycle helmets as part of a campaign to reduce the number and severity of brain injury accidents.

Pupils will be shown a video illustrating the consequences of brain injury and will have the chance to win a cycle helmet in a competition.

Sue Motram from 'Headway Dorset', said: "the value of wearing a helmet has been recognised in competitive cycling and many more general cyclists are choosing to wear them. It is important that children understand the implications of a head injury and consider their own safety whilst out cycling."

Sally Funnell, Cycling / Walking Officer, Borough of Poole, said: "We encourage children to wear helmets when undertaking cycling proficiency training and stress that when wearing a cycle helmet it is important to make sure it fits snugly. It should be level and rest just above the eyebrows and cover the forehead. The straps need to be placed around the ears, not over them."
