North Canford Cliffs Is Designated Conservation Area

A new conservation area has been designated in Canford Cliffs, Poole. It is the fifteenth area in the Borough to be given such status and was agreed by the Executive Committee on 27 February 2002.

A Council survey found that the character and appearance of the buildings and townscapes in the area, which includes parts of DeMauley Road, Spencer Road, Elmstead Road, Haven Road and Newton Road were worthy of such status. Officers found that nearly 70% of the buildings significantly added to the character of their surroundings due to their design and appearance. This view was supported by the Council’s Environment and Prosperity Policy Advisory Group.

Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Spokesperson for Environment & Prosperity, Borough of Poole, said: "It is great to see some of the beautiful and unique areas we have in Poole being protected. This area is part of a wider study stretching from Sandbanks peninsular to Evening Hill and as far as Canford Cliffs Library and Compton Acres which is being undertaken with the assistance of local residents groups. We will continue to assess the local area and whether there is potential for awarding Conservation Status in other parts of Poole, all of which helps to ensure that Poole retains it’s lovely surroundings."

Richard Knott, Planning Design & Conservation Services, Borough of Poole, said: "Poole’s existing Conservation Areas vary in character from the Old Town to Poole Park and large parts of the residential district of Branksome Park. Within Conservation Areas the Council has more to oversee, for example, most buildings cannot be demolished without permission. This is particularly important in North Canford Cliffs where the buildings make such an important contribution to the character of the area."

Residents within the proposed conservation area have been sent a copy of the plan together with a leaflet which answers many of the questions most frequently asked by people living in Conservation Areas.
