Major Refurbishment of Towngate Bridge, Poole

Essential work to refurbish the 30 year old Towngate bridge in Poole is due to begin at midnight on Sunday 24 February.

As part of a major programme to maintain Poole’s roads, the project includes the removal and replacement of the tarmac surfacing, road waterproofing, central kerbs and lighting on the busy flyover which connects Hungerhill to the George roundabout.

In order to keep disruption to a minimum, work will be carried out 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the next 5 weeks and is scheduled to finish on 28 March in time for the Easter weekend.

Throughout the period single lane traffic will remain open in each direction across the bridge.

Cllr Bob Williams, said: "This work is part of a £2million programme of investment which is helping to maintain roads in Poole. A huge amount of planning has taken place in order to ensure we can do this essential work as quickly and efficiently as possible. Whilst there will be delays during busy periods we would ask drivers to bear with us and apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Following consultation with groups including Poole’s Town Centre Management Board, the scheme has been timed to fit in with better weather conditions and will take place before major traffic increases due to holiday visitors .

Jan Knox, Town Centre Manager, said: "This work is essential and the Council have made tremendous efforts to consult with businesses in the Town Centre on the work."
