Improvements to Mountbatten Arms Roundabout

Essential repairs to the Mountbatten Arms Roundabout at the junction of Ringwood Road and Wallisdown Road are due to begin on 5 April 2004 and are set to be completed by July 2004.

The improvement scheme will include installing traffic signals on all of the main approaches, local road widening, lane markings on the roundabout and the creation of footways and cycleways. Essential road maintenance works will also be carried out at the same time to reduce the need for any extensive disturbance in the future.

Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Local Economy, said: "As this is one of the major junctions in the Poole and Bournemouth conurbation we have been making plans for some time to improve the traffic flow. Whilst this junction is always busy, it is anticipated that by doing these works we can reduce congestion, particularly at peak times. It will certainly be safer for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists who will benefit from controlled signal crossings. Officers will also place signs to warn of the roadworks well in advance in order that drivers can plan different routes to avoid excessive congestion

The scheme is being primarily funded by the Borough of Poole with a contribution from Bournemouth Borough Council, together with payment from the nearby B & Q development to the north of Ringwood Road.

To keep traffic disruption to a minimum the start of the scheme, originally planned for the beginning of February, has been delayed to avoid conflict with the major road surfacing on Wessex Way which was due to be completed by the end of March. However, due to bad weather conditions the Wessex Way completion is now predicted to be April 2004.

Steve Tite, Highways Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "Unfortunately when carrying out works at a busy junction like this, major traffic congestion is unavoidable. To help reduce the delays for motorists we will be undertaking some of the most disruptive operations during the night, but others will have to be done during the day. We have deferred the scheme as much as possible but need to start in April as the work must be completed before the start of the busy summer season. Whilst the first few weeks will overlap with the Wessex Way Scheme, it should not have a major effect on congestion at this time, particularly with the reduced amount of traffic during the school and university Easter holidays. We apologise now for any inconvenience which may be caused."
