9 May 06Launch of Garden Waste Recycling Scheme
This week, 12,000 households will be receiving green bins as part of the first phase of the new garden waste recycling scheme being introduced by the Borough of Poole. The initiative will eventually encompass a significant proportion of the borough.
The new recycling scheme gets underway on Monday 5th June and will run over the summer months with the first phase running until November this year. A 240 litre green bin will be used in a fortnightly collection.
Cllr Don Collier, Portfolio Holder for the Environment said “The People of Poole have shown they want to recycle and we want to help them. Building on the successful Blue Bin Scheme we are now introducing a green recycling scheme which will roll out across the borough. Garden waste should not go to landfill. The more we recycle the better it is for the environment and in the long run it's better for council tax so a double win for the people of Poole. We are hoping that our residents will fully embrace this new scheme the way they have embraced the blue bin initiative”.
The first phase will cover certain properties in Hamworthy, Merley, Penn Hill, Broadstone, Creekmoor, Parkstone and Canford Cliffs. Residents who are already home composting and have no need for a kerbside garden waste scheme can opt out.
Participating households have been sent an information pack through their door detailing what can and cannot be collected together with a collection calendar.
Those areas not receiving the garden waste scheme will benefit from the mobile collection schemes running in two locations within the Borough, in addition to the Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre. Residents will be able to visit designated sites at the weekend to dispose of their garden waste. Further information on the dates and times of these sites will be published in the local newspapers and on boroughofpoole.com.
Improvements have been made at the Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre over the last year following receipt of Government funding. More bays have been built to collect garden waste and the signage has been improved both inside and outside of the site.
