Encouraging signs for Poole Harbour Bridge from EU Green Paper

The campaign for Poole Harbour Bridge may have a significant boost thanks to a new EU Green Paper on Sea Ports.

The Paper will be considered at the Borough of Poole Planning and Transportation Committee on Thursday 2 April.

The Green Paper acknowledges the importance of sea ports for the EU - the sector handling 90% of the Union’s trade with the third world, 30% of intra EU traffic and 200 million passengers per year.

In particular the Paper promotes :

  • The essential role of sea ports in providing integrated and effective links between different transport modes (sea, air, road, rail).
  • That the Port of Poole (amongst others) should be added to the Trans European Transport Network (TEN-T)
  • The need to promote the efficiency of ports

"Poole’s sea port enjoys a rail link and is in proximity to an airport, but we do not have the luxury of good road links. This is why the Poole Harbour Bridge campaign is so important, to provide the essential access to this network link and ease the problems of congestion that Poole has suffered for so long. We hope that this may be the extra catalyst to make the Bridge a high priority in the Government’s road programme" said Cllr Bob Williams, Chairman of Planning & Transportation Committee.

"Poole Harbour is also of great environmental and recreational significance and the infrastructure to support these roles should not count against Poole’s status as a commercial port." he added.
