28 Nov 01Park and Ride Scheme for Poole
Plans for a park & ride scheme adjacent Creekmoor have been discussed at a meeting following concerns expressed by local residents.
Some frequently asked questions have been answered by Council officers in response the concerns raised:
Question | Answer |
Why do we need a park & ride scheme? | It will offer choice for those travelling to Poole Town Centre and lower the total cost of commuting and parking. It will also support the vitality of the town by freeing up short stay parking spaces. |
Why was the site chosen? | It is appropriate for such a scheme and is adjacent to one the fastest routes into Poole and is ideally located to intercept journeys in the Town Centre. |
Will there be closed circuit TV cameras on site? | Under consultation - to be decided |
How much will it cost to park & ride? | It is anticipated that the cost will be £1.50 - £2 |
Who is paying for its construction? | It will be mainly funded by town centre developers and the Government |
What is the impact on local residents? | There will be a small increase in traffic - local residents are being consulted on measures to minimise the impact. |
Have residents been consulted? | Over the last three years there have been many opportunities for people to express their views including formal planning processes, seminar style meetings at the Civic Centre and a public exhibition at Creekmoor. |
Who will the scheme benefit? | The scheme will support the town and a vibrant Town Centre is good for all residents. Those who use the park and ride are likely to save more than £900 p.a. in car parking charges. Reduced on-street parking will transform the lives of those who live in Heckford Park. |
Will there be toilets on the site? | Under consultation - yet to be decided |
How frequent will the buses be? | Anticipated every 10 minutes |
How many cars will the scheme cater for? | Phase 1 will provide for 550 parking spaces |
Has there been an environmental study? | The eastern part of the site has been filled with household waste. The impact of the fill is still being investigated. Phase 1 of the development does not involve this land. |
Councillor Bob Williams, Executive Spokesperson for Environment and Prosperity, said: "This Park & Ride scheme has been clearly identified since 1994 both in the Poole local plan and through the consultation we have offered. In 1999 the scheme was granted outline planning permission by the planning committee which was represented by all three political parties, proving that it has unanimous support. I appreciate that members of the public may have concerns but I am surprised that some local people were unaware of the plans. We make every effort to keep the public informed of strategic issues that may have a local impact but it is clear that we need to improve the way we do this. I hope that people’s fears will be alleviated at tonight’s meeting."
Jim Bright, Head of Transportation Services, Borough of Poole, said: "We are reviewing every aspect of this scheme and the consultation in Creekmoor on 12 & 13 November was specifically designed to give local residents the opportunity to comment, we gained some very useful information from this and are listening to what residents say. Any works that may be required to support the bus journey to the town will be reviewed and traffic regulation orders have been advertised. The plan has the support of Bournemouth and Christchurch and it is part of a series of such schemes across the conurbation to help with reducing town centre traffic. The detailed scheme will be determined by the planning committee in the near future.
