Poole Achieves Record Results In Recycling And Waste Recovery

Quarterly analysis on waste recycling figures at Poole’s Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre show that in June 2003 a staggering 72% of waste was recycled and recovered, making it one of the leading facilities in the country.

This figure looks set to continue following the Council’s investment in the redevelopment of the site and residents’ commitment to waste separation.

The Nuffield Waste Recycling Centre will undergo further improvements to ensure the Borough of Poole meet the requirements of the Waste Strategy and new legislation, contained within the Waste and Emissions Trading Bill, which is due to come into force in April 2004.

Councillor Jonathan Pethen, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "The Government has set Poole very challenging targets and it is extremely encouraging to see the community responding to the changes we have made to the site. Further developments are planned and we are additionally reviewing options to improve kerbside recycling services."

Modifications already in place at the site include:

  • Provision of additional recycling areas \n

  • Improved waste segregation and waste recovery areas \n

  • New facilities for waste separation contributing to raising awareness and education amongst users \n

  • Improved signage and overall design of the site resulting in reduced waiting times and use of previously redundant space \n

These developments herald the start of an on-going programme of works to achieve sustainable waste management, as outlined in Poole’s adopted waste strategy.

Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection, Borough of Poole, said: "The figures are excellent and show that Poole is leading the way in waste management. Residents and site staff should be proud of their achievements that exceed any I am aware of nationally. The separation of products that can be recycled is becoming ever more efficient and efforts to secure new markets for recyclable materials have added to that improvement."

More materials than ever before can be recycled, composted, recovered or reused, including; glass, paper, steel and aluminium cans, plastic bottles, textiles, cardboard, wood, green waste, metals, bric a brac, soil and rubble, car batteries, engine oil, printer cartridges, fridge’s and freezers, gas bottles and electrical equipment.
