Top Achievements at GCSE for Pupils and Schools in Poole

Schools in Poole have once again gained GCSE results which are well above national averages, as published today by the government in school by school Tables for GCSE examinations taken by 16 year olds last summer.

59% of students in Poole schools achieved at least five top grades at GCSE, 95% achieved five or more pass grades and 98% gained at least one GCSE pass. The number of top A* and A grades improved by 4% over last year, with 22% of entries achieving these coveted high level grades.

Councillor Brian Clements, Executive Spokesperson for Education said, "I am delighted that schools in Poole have again been able to show improvements, and that they compare so well with the national picture. Students have to work extremely hard over several years to succeed well at GCSE but these efforts are extremely worthwhile and give an important starting point for our young people's working lives".

Jeff Hart, Head of School Advice and Support Service added, "Last year Poole was the eighth highest LEA nationally for GCSE. I have no doubt that the combined results for the Borough and the outcomes for individual schools will show extremely high performance compared with the rest of the country when the national picture becomes clear. It is a credit to the schools and students in Poole that we continue to improve each year in this way."

He added: "Teachers and support staff in schools have continued to work extremely hard to enable each student to achieve their best and I am pleased to see their efforts being rewarded by improvements in results. Over recent years there has been more pressure on schools to perform better at GCSE However, these exam results are only one measure of a school's success and we must not forget our students' achievements in so many other areas of school life which play an important part in taking young people forward into adulthood."
