19 Oct 01Boost for Beach Huts
Poole’s popular beach huts will receive a much needed facelift this winter thanks to a limited increase in rents as funding for the beach huts maintenance has been increased to: £65,000 this winter (2001/2002) and over £77,000 for winter 2002/2003.
To help plan further work, beach hut rents will increase by an average of £1.07 with maximum increases limited to £1.50 per week. The average charge for a beach hut in Poole is currently £658.74, including rates and VAT and increases are due to take effect from 1 January 2002.
Councillor Graham Wilson, Executive Spokesperson for Leisure, said: "Our beach huts are a fantastic asset and it is important to keep them maintained to a high standard. We can do this with both the support of the Council and the tenants. The planned maintenance and small increase in rents should ensure that the huts remain something to be proud of and a pastime which residents and visitors to our beaches can enjoy."
With Poole’s beach huts becoming increasingly popular, Officers in Leisure Services have begun a complete review of the beach hut allocation and letting system. Currently 1035 people are on the waiting list for a beach hut in Poole.
Jayne Taylor, Leisure Services, Borough of Poole, said: "In comparison to going away on holiday, Poole’s beach huts are excellent value for money. Local people are able to take advantage of the good weather and the facilities at our Blue Flag beaches, therefore they use their beach huts a lot and because of this people tend to hang on to the huts, which can mean that waiting lists grow."
Currently an average of 20 - 25 huts are re-allocated to people on the waiting list each year. Leisure Services will also be looking at increasing the number of beach huts available for short term lets. This would allow more local people to benefit from the use of a beach hut throughout the year, rather than having to wait for annual lets to become available.
