24 Jan 05Free Course for Carers
People who look after a relative or friend living in Poole will be able to attend a free training course to help them access the information and advice they need. The course, run by Poole Social Services, will teach people who care for someone on a regular basis the skills and support which make it easier to look after someone who is elderly, has an illness or disability. Cllr Elaine Atkinson, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community Support, Borough of Poole, said: "Caring for someone can be hard work and very isolating. People who have attended the course in the past have told us that it can be very helpful to learn about the support available and to have an opportunity to meet with others in a similar position." Topics included on the training are benefits advice, stress management, moving and handling techniques, first aid and personal care skills. Carers can attend the whole course or just the parts which they are most interested in. If the carer needs help to look after the person who they care for whilst they attend this can normally be arranged a very small charge. The course starts 25 February and runs between 11am-2pm every Friday for 12 weeks. To find out more and sign up for the course, call Val Mitchell on 01202 261174.
