19 Oct 01Poole Exceeds Government Targets
Poole students have exceeded the national targets set by the Government for G.C.S.E grades in 2001.
The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) have announced figures which reveal that 59% of pupils in Poole achieved five or more A* - C grades in their G.C.S.E’s this year. Nationally the figure for 15 year olds gaining top grades is 49.8%, therefore Poole has exceeded the national average by 9%.
91% of students nationally gained five or more A* - G grades whilst in Poole 95% of its students achieved this standard. Only 2% of students in Poole failed to gain one G.C.S.E pass when nationally the figure for this is 5.5%.
Jeff Hart, Head of School Advice and Support, Borough of Poole, said: "I am extremely pleased with these figures which show how much hard work has gone into providing a high standard of education in the Borough. It is to the credit of our schools, pupils and families that we are able to achieve these results and not only reach but exceed the challenging targets that schools and their students are set."
Forthcoming research commissioned by the DfES will show that there are clear financial benefits to students who complete and continue their education with research showing that students who complete their G.C.S.E’s can increase their income by 10%.
Councillor Brian Clements, Leader of the Council, said: "We should be very proud of our schools, pupils and teachers. These excellent results will give students a solid base from which to launch their careers and continue their academic or vocational education. I wish all of our students in Poole the very best for the future."
