Planning for the future of Council Housing in Poole

A master plan securing the future of Council housing in Poole is due to be submitted to the Government next week.

Following unanimous approval by the Council, the 30 year business plan sets out the investment in repairs and refurbishment confirming the Borough’s continued ownership of its 5,300 Council homes.

Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Spokesperson for Environment & Prosperity, said: "Nationally the transfer of Council housing stock to Housing Associations has been an issue, with many tenants unsure about what the future will bring. This plan developed with our tenants now helps to put these concerns to rest and means we can plan for the Poole’s future. The cost of housing has meant that many are unable to get on the property ladder. By safeguarding and investing in Poole’s Council housing we have a firm basis to work with Housing Associations to bring forward new and much needed affordable housing for families in Poole. The new Plan shows that the Council can balance the books and deliver a first class housing service at the same time."

Proposals in the plan include meeting the Government’s new ‘Decent Homes’ standard by investing just under £6.5 million per year on repairs and improvements, including the refurbishment of kitchens, bathrooms, rewiring, door and window replacements. To help, the Government has given Poole an extra £1.8million per year ‘Major Repairs Allowance’.

The business plan, together with Poole’s Housing Strategy which sets out how more new affordable new homes are provided, will be assessed by the Government and feedback is due later this year.
