Poole's Response to American Tragedy

At 11am on Friday 14 September, the Borough of Poole will join in the international day of mourning following Tuesday’s attack on the United States of America. As a mark of respect to those who lost their lives and to express deepest sympathies to their bereaved families and friends, people around the world will unite in silence.

The Mayor of Poole, Councillor Ron Parker together with the Sheriff, Councillor Graham Mason, will observe the three minutes silence from the Balcony outside the Mayor’s Parlour at the Civic Centre, Poole, which continues to fly the American flag at half mast.

Speaking yesterday the Mayor of Poole said: "I am devastated to hear of the terrible and horrific events in America as a result of terrorist attacks. It is impossible to imagine the aftermath that such a tragedy will bring. Our prayers and deepest sympathies are with all those affected by this disaster, in America, the United Kingdom and all over the world."

Members of the public are invited to join Members and officers of the Council who will gather in the car park at the front of the building at 10.55am in readiness for the ceremony. The Mayor’s Chaplain, Canon Peter Webb and Civic Chaplain, Reverend Jonathan Martin, will both say a short prayer. Traffic lights around the Civic Centre will be switched to red shortly before 11.00am in order that the silence may be observed.

A book of condolences, which will be started by the Mayor of Poole after the ceremony, will be situated in the Civic Centre Reception.

As Civic Chaplain, Reverend Jonathan Martin will open Parkstone United Reformed Church from 8am - 9am and 4pm - 5pm tomorrow to enable Members and Officers of the Council to pray or just quietly sit should they so wish. A short prayer will be led at 8.15am, 8.30am, 8.45am and 9am.
