9 Oct 06£1M to be Spent on Leisure Time in Poole
The Borough of Poole is poised to spend over £1million of developers’ contributions on improving and enhancing a number of leisure facilities across the Borough.
Developers contributions, or planning obligations as they are otherwise known, are made in recognition that any residential development by private developers should make appropriate financial provision for recreation facilities, in accordance with Poole’s Local Plan
.
A total of 10 initiatives have been identified by the Council’s Leisure Services team, for which work will begin over the coming few weeks:
- Upton Country Park Walled Garden. The first phase of the improvement works will include creating new footpaths, installing box hedges and planting to create a more accessible and picturesque environment for people to enjoy. Investment of £67,500 with the total project costing £130,000.
- Sandbanks Recreation Ground. A £400,000 initiative to create a children’s play area and improve the overall landscape.
- Beach Road Car Park. Improvements totalling £30,000 will make the car park at Branksome Chine more user friendly.
- Poole Park Public Toilets. £50,000 worth of enhancements will be made to this popular public facility.
- Play areas at Whitecliff Rec, Kingston Road, St Georges Field, and Hamworthy and Learoyd Road. £435,000 will be spent on installing new play equipment and improving the safety provision.
- Poole Cycle Speedway. £22,000 will be spent improving the Speedway creating the potential to host the National Championships next year
Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “I am really pleased to see these schemes coming forward. We are absolutely committed to ensuring the money raised through residential development is given back to the local community through the improvement and enhancement of popular leisure facilities such as these. We have changed the way we manage this area of spending to remove the log jam and we are now seeing the fruits of these changes .”
