5 Sep 01Rossmore College Re-Opening Delayed
Students at Rossmore Community College will receive an extra few days off due to delays to refurbishment work at the school. As part of a £1.5million investment, extensive refurbishment work carried out during the summer, including a new reception area, the removal of asbestos and enlargement of classrooms in the school’s main block, has been delayed. Some of the work, carried out by contractors on behalf of the Borough of Poole, was due to be completed during the summer holidays. Parents have been advised that due to the delay, Years 11, 12 and 13 will be returning to school on Monday 10 September as originally planned, with years 8, 9 and 10 returning on Thursday 13 September. Diane Spencer, Head of Property Services, Borough of Poole, said: "Delays can occur with large scale projects such as the one at Rossmore, especially when dealing with complex areas such as asbestos removal and fire precaution works, alongside other refurbishment. We would like to apologise to everyone affected by the delay." Cllr Bob Williams, Executive spokesperson for Education, said: "Whilst there have been delays, our main priority is to ensure the pupils and staff get the new facilities they have been waiting for. Providing improved classrooms and teaching areas in addition to the two refurbished science laboratories which were completed in April will be an essential part of helping the school to reach its tough targets for the coming year. I hope the work will be completed as quickly as possible to minimise disruption for students, staff and parents at the school." Catherine Shaw, Headteacher, said: "Many people have been working throughout the holiday period to achieve what was always going to be a difficult task. The areas of the school that have been refurbished are going to make an enormous difference to our young people and their teachers; they are deserving of this improved learning environment. The conditions they have worked in have been substandard for many years. As the term progresses we will be offering extended day session and holiday learning schemes to make up some of the lost time. My thanks to all those who have been so supportive throughout the project, short term pain for long term gain!" -ends- Editor’s Notes: Poole’s new Rossmore Community College, previously named The Martin Kemp-Welch School, currently has 740 pupils. The final stage of the £1.5million refurbishment includes the new main front entrance block and special needs area which will be completed by December 2001.
