3 Sep 01Poole Audi Hex-treme Prize Winners
Triumphant winners of Poole Audi Hex-treme's premier multi-discipline sporting event celebrated yesterday following a gruelling row, sail, windsurf, swim, cycle and run.
Hex-treme champion and overall winner, Richard Vail, aged 24, from Surrey, completed the event in a time of 1hr 02 mins 32 secs and received the first ever Poole Audi Hex-treme trophy, £500, clothing from the new 'Scrap' label and a free membership to 'Fitness First'.
Richard, who also achieved the best result for the combined water sports events, said: "I've been teaching water sports for the last couple of years, so had an added advantage in some areas, but I've never done anything like this before. This is a great event because it crosses so many disciplines and has involved people with very different skills. All the competitors really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to coming back next year to defend my title."
Second place Brian Squires, from Bath, completed the event in 1.08.04 and a close third was David Allsop from Cambridgeshire in 1.09.40. Brian also achieved the best triathlon result of 0.58.53 with David also winning £100 for first Veteran (+35 category).
The first woman to complete the event was Ann Knights, aged 35, from Cambridgeshire in 1.17.01, ahead of Kate Allenby, aged 27 from Oxfordshire (Bronze Medalist at the Sydney 2000 Olympics in the Modern Pentathlon) who completed the event in 1.25.54. Third woman was Victoria Moore, aged 30, from London who crossed the finish line in 1.29.37.
Ann said: "Sailing and windsurfing were my worst events and I managed to injure my knee when I came off the board. Running over Evening Hill and the finish along soft sand at Sandbanks also made it really tough but it has been a really super event and I've thoroughly enjoyed it."
Sponsor David Kelly, Managing Director of Poole Audi, awarded the competitors with their prizes. Second and third places received £100 and £50 plus clothes from the brand new clothing label 'Scrap' launched at the event.
Crowds of spectators cheered the 28 competitors throughout the event showing lots of enthusiasm and there are plans for Hex-treme events to be held in Poole and further afield in the future.

Editors note:
Hex-treme finish times were calculated by combining the 3 water sports and compressing the time to give the triathlon start position. The triathlon result was then added to this giving the overall Hex-treme result.
