29 Dec 04Neighbourhood Watch!
Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevention initiatives ever. Behind it lies a simple idea, a central value shared by millions of people around the country:
Getting together with your neighbours to take action to cut local crime
Everyone knows that the police fight crime, but they need help to do an effective job. Neighbourhood Watch is all about an active partnership with the police. By acting as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the community, Neighbourhood Watch schemes can:
- Cut crime and the opportunities for crime
- Help and reassure those who live in fear of crime
- Encourage neighbourliness and closer communities
Neighbourhood Watch is also about creating close-knit communities that care. It brings local people together and can make a real contribution to improving their lives. It will allow you to become familiar with crime prevention ideas which will help keep your home and belongings safe, and will also allow you to become familiar with the area you live in and provide opportunities to meet your neighbours. As most crime is opportunist, committed on the spur of the moment, there is enormous scope for reducing the chances for criminals by improving your security and raising awareness of crime prevention/community safety initiatives.
The Borough of Poole together with Dorset Police are keen to support anyone who may be interested in joining Neighbourhood Watch or interested in starting their own group. Alternatively, if you are already in a Neighbourhood Watch group, let us know so that we can add your details to our mailing list – we facilitate quarterly co-ordinator meetings for Poole groups and you are welcome to come along. A representative from Poole Police is in attendance and co-ordinators are given the opportunity to discuss any problems they may be experiencing and seek advice from other members.
We are also looking for new ideas to incorporate into the meetings so if you want to know about community safety issues, let us know how we can best help you.
We are also looking to create a database of all kinds of watch scheme within Poole – from houses to horses, from shops to caravans, so if you are watching it, let us know – who knows, you could be the first of its kind in Dorset.
