19 Oct 05BBC Journalist to Chair Poole Youth Conference
BBC South’s Political Editor Peter Henley will be guest chairman of a special meeting being held at the Borough of Poole’s Youth Conference on October 26.
Mr Henley will field questions from a youth audience to members of an expert panel asking them to consider implications of the Green Consultation Paper – Youth Matters.
The meeting will be the highlight of an afternoon of workshops attended by dozens of young people, aged 13 to 19 years, interested in having their say on services for young people in the town.
The Conference in the Civic Centre will begin with a welcome and introduction to the afternoon’s events by the Mayor of Poole Cllr Lou Knight.
Mayor Cllr Lou Knight, said: “This is an opportunity for any young people out there with burning questions to ask about the services available to them, to get in touch. It is extremely important to take note of what young people have to say and I look forward to this event and meeting with many of them to hear their views.”
The 2005 Youth Conference is being held in association with Local Democracy Week (October 17-24) but has been organised to take place the week after to coincide with Half Term. The event has been organised jointly by the Borough of Poole’s Electoral Services and Youth Services.
Among those attending will be Superintendent Wesley Trickey of Dorset Police Poole Division, Director of Children’s Services in Poole John Nash, local MP’s, Borough of Poole Councillors and council officers.
Peter Cooper, Senior Youth Worker, Pupil, Parent & Youth Services, Borough of Poole, said: “This piece of work is part of a broader consultation across the borough. Already issues from the Green Paper have kicked off responses from young people and we hope to offer them a chance to explore these in more detail at the conference. It is hoped that young people in their half term break will make it to the event and air their views. The ones who turn up on the day will be there because they want to and that will make all the difference. The conference is also a recruiting day for Poole Youth Forum.”
