Carers' Week June 13-19

Carers Week, supported by the Borough of Poole, is held nationally every year to highlight the needs of people who look after family and friends who are unwell, disabled or frail. Many of the looked after people would not be able to cope at home without the help and support of their carers who go without payment.

More than one in eight people in the UK care for friends and relatives, often juggling their caring role with working and family life.

Elaine Atkinson Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community Support, Borough of Poole, said: "Caring can place a tremendous strain on families. There couldn't be a better time to draw attention to the needs of the six million people in the UK who provide care. At Poole looking after carers is a high priority for us as we are aware and value the enormous contribution that carers make."

Many people willingly give over 50 hours of their time a week to help their loved ones remain at home. Often these carers are in poor health themselves as the stresses and strain of caring take their toll. This year the Borough of Poole is again working with Poole Primary Care Trust to help carers improve their health and get the support they need.

Val Mitchell, Carers Development Officer,Adult Social Services, Borough of Poole, said: "The most worrying thing is that many people who could get some help to care for their relatives fail to seek assistance or have difficulty finding out what is available. We would like to encourage carers to visit our information stand in the Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole on Monday 13 June from 9.30am-4.30pm where qualified advisors and carers will be on hand to offer support and advice."

The information stand is part of a week-long programme arranged to support carers in the Poole area. The week includes opportunities to meet with other carers for information and social events. To give carers a break there is also a mystery tour, an evening carers group, a pamper day sponsored by Esporta and a cream tea outing at Upton House.

If you are caring and need more information about how to relieve the stress of caring or want to join in some of the Carers Week events please contact Val Mitchell on 01202 261174.
