Suggestions Sought on Improvements to School Run

Parents in Poole are being asked for suggestions to improve safety and congestion on the busy school run.

Over the next 3 years, Poole's recently appointed School Travel Plan Co-ordinator, Nick Ellis, will be working with each of the Borough's 42 schools, to develop their own individual travel plans. Parents will be involved too, with a survey asking for information about their children's current school travel arrangements and suggestions for improvements.

Nick Ellis says: "Everybody can consider walking, cycling and getting the bus to school. Each school's travel plan will focus on making it safer and easier to use these alternatives to the car. The knock-on effects will be less congestion and healthier children."

Typical travel plans will address issues such as parking problems outside schools, pedestrian training, cycling proficiency and the creation of carshare and walking bus schemes.

Parents with suggestions for solving problems outside their child's school can contact Nick Ellis on Tel: (01202) 262017 or write to Transportation Services, St John's House, Serpentine Road, Poole, BH15 2DX. Email: n.ellis@poole.gov.uk

Editor's Notes:

Many Local Authorities nationally are writing Travel Plans for schools and work places. Poole is the first in the SouthWest to have its own dedicated officer for schools and the post is being funded by the Government for three years. Nick Ellis has already visited 19 schools in the Borough to work on draft travel plans.
