24 Aug 01Summer School Brings Creative Art to Alderney
Young people from Alderney have been experiencing the enjoyment of creative arts this summer at a special Summer school designed to encourage drama, dance and music. Organised by Poole Youth Services Arts Development Project and Rossmore Community School (formerly Martin Kemp Welch), 69 local 11-13 year olds were given the opportunity to work with a variety of creative arts specialists in order to develop a performance of their own.
The modern folk tale style performance included African drumming, drama, dance and poetry along with music created by using musical instruments made of junk. To support this, a variety of props and sculptures were on display, some of which can be seen in the Civic Centre foyer from 3 to 17 September. One of the features of the display will be a sculpture of a giant diary which contains a visual record of the experience enjoyed during each day of the project.
Peter Cooper, Senior Youth Worker, said: " One of the aims of the Summer school was to introduce new young people to the school. At the same time we ran the literacy project so, over the period up to 80 young people were attending the school. The young people worked with older 15 and 16 year olds with whom they will have contact with in the future. The project is a great example of how youth services and schools can join to provide an excellent opportunity for young people. The school provided a space, recruited the participants and organised a team of older children to help out. We provided the help and expertise. "
Sam aged 14, from Alderney said: "Throughout the whole project I had a brilliant time. Everyone was nice and helpful and I think everyone who took part in Alderney Arts Project can walk away with something to be proud of. "
