8 Aug 03Plans to re-open Turlin Moor footbridge
News of a Government funding bid, due in a couple of weeks, could mean the go ahead for plans to re-open a popular footbridge linking Foreland Road, Hamworthy with Rockley Park. The footbridge, which crosses the railway line and forms part of the highway network in Poole, was closed to the public in June on safety grounds following extensive vandalism. As well as needing to repair the damage, the thirty year old bridge also requires essential refurbishment to prolong its life. Helen Rice, Senior Civil Engineer, said :"Because of the severity of the damage to the bridge, the cost of repair and refurbishment is similar to completely replacing it. So in order to provide a long term solution for residents, we have submitted a bid for Government funding to provide a completely new structure." The result of the bid is due to be announced later this month. Cllr Ron Parker, Transportation Portfolio Holder, said: "This is a vital link for the community so if this bid is unsuccessful we will ensure that the safety repairs are carried so that the bridge can re-open as soon as possible. We can then look at how we can provide funding for the refurbishment work needed so we can protect it longer term."
