6 Jun 03Poole's Care Team To Learn New Skills
Poole's Shared Care team will be joining other members of Shared Care South West (SCSW) for their annual conference on 11 June. The theme this year 'Toddlers to teens - living with disability' aimed at parents and carers of disabled children as well as professionals in the field.
Poole Shared Care Scheme is a member of the SCSW organisation and is a local scheme that recruits and trains carers. These volunteers care for a disabled child in their own or the child's home offering regular short breaks - from one day a week to a weekend every month.
Amanda Harriskine, Shared Care Senior Practitioner, said: "These short breaks give the child new friends and experiences and the child's family get much needed time for themselves. New carers are always needed; experience of disability is useful but training and support are given and a fee paid."
There are several workshops during the day covering subjects including 'Structure and Predictability' that aims to help autistic or otherwise disabled children understand the world, 'Anger Management' from toddler tantrums to teenage rebellion and 'Helping children with learning disabilities to express emotions.'
Cllr Elaine Atkinson, Portfolio Holder for Community Support, said: "It's great for Poole that our Shared Care team will be attending this conference. We have a lot of ideas to share and are always looking for new ways to help Poole residents enjoy a higher standard of life. Hopefully events like this will raise awareness of their good work and increase the number of volunteer carers."
Costs are kept low for all conference delegates and sponsorship allows a limited number of free places to parents and carers. If you would like more information on either the conference or becoming a shared carer please contact Amanda, Ann or Yvonne from Poole Shared Care on (01202) 714606.
The event takes place at the Springfield Hotel in Wareham on Wednesday 11 June from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
