6 Jun 03It's All Happening On Poole's Winning Beaches!

Councillors and officers from the Borough of Poole celebrated with the RNLI and local people today as the Blue Flag was hoisted once again at Sandbanks beach.
Sandbanks has been awarded the prestigious status for the 15th year in a row! The beach boasts more than three miles of golden sand and has been rated amongst the top 5 beaches in the country by the Tidy Britain Group resort survey (2000). Receiving the award this year are: Poole Sandbanks Beach, Poole Shore Road Beach and Poole Branksome Chine Beach. \n
Cllr Jonathan Pethen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure & Recreation, said: "Poole has some wonderful beaches and the fact that we have received this award again is a great indication of how well they are looked after. We are fortunate to have these beautiful beaches on our doorstep and it’s important we all take care to keep them at their best." \nAs well as enjoying Poole’s clean beaches and water, this year visitors can try out some new attractions including the brand new 18 hole Crazy Golf course, trampolines, indian head massage, hair braiding and face painting. This is in addition to old favourites such as the 18 hole putting green and a host of watersports fun including kayaks, catamarans, pedal boats and body boards.
Clive Smith, Head of Leisure Services, Borough of Poole, said: "Staff work hard to keep Poole’s beaches to a high standard and this award indicates that we succeed year after year. We are dedicated to ensuring that these outstanding beaches continue to rank as some of the best in the world so that residents and visitors can enjoy Poole at its best. With more going on at Sandbanks than ever before, this year looks set to be a winner."
The Blue Flag Award has very strict criteria for bathing water, beach safety and supervision, good beach management and clear information for the public. It is an exclusive eco-label awarded to more than 2800 beaches and marinas in 23 countries across Europe and South Africa in 2002.
ENCAMS (Environmental Campaigns Seaside Awards & Blue Flag Campaign) awards the Blue Flags as part of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign which it runs for FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education).
