Trees In Canford Heath

Trees that surround nine blocks of flats in Hasler Road, Canford Heath, are to be worked on by a team of tree surgeons from the Borough of Poole. The work will secure the safety of the sites for residents, as well as ensuring that trees on the site have the correct environment to survive.

Cllr Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Local Economy, said: "For many years trees have been growing closer to the windows and roofs of the flats. Residents have been concerned about the lack of light and potential danger of such large trees for some time and we are carrying out a programme of work to deal with these issues."

Steve Cox, Arboriculture Officer, Borough of Poole, said: "An important part of any tree management programme on a site like this is replanting, which will take place in autumn this year. The newly planted trees will be positioned where they won’t cause the same problems that we are presently working to remedy."

He added: "Once the work is completed the trees should benefit from the extra space and new planting should ensure that there are still sufficient trees on the site for the future. The work programme is designed to maintain the balance between the needs of the residents and to retain as many trees as possible. Overall, the proposed programme will be a great improvement; healthier trees, more light reaching the flats, more space between the trees, better positioning to provide screening in future."

In total there are over 300 trees on the site, of which 72 must be felled with 68 to be pruned. All of the trees have been surveyed and their details will be added to a database that will hold all the information regarding trees owned by the Council. The work is due to begin over the next two weeks.
