Poole Celebrates Its Success

The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Ray Smith, Chief Executive, John McBride and the Leader of the Council, Cllr Brian Leverett, will join employees at an event to celebrate Poole's success in achieving full Investors in People status.  The event will be held at Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the Arts, at 4.30pm on 5 June 2003.

The Borough of Poole has been awarded Investors in People (IiP) status following a rigorous process known as the ‘building block’ approach. The award recognises the Authority’s commitment to its employees and their training and development needs.

As the success is essentially down to individual achievements of Council staff, the Borough of Poole is holding a ‘Celebration of Success’ event. The event will highlight the qualifications and skills gained in the last 12 months by employees who have contributed to the Council achieving full IiP status.

John McBride, Chief Executive of the Borough of Poole, said: "Achieving the Investors in People award through the ‘building’ block’ process has been hard work and a long journey for us all. However, I’m sure everyone would agree that in helping our staff reach their full potential we have invested in their future as well as the future of continued excellent services for residents of Poole."

As part of the ‘building block’ approach to IiP, each individual Service Unit in the Council was assessed and individually awarded IiP. Only then could an application for IiP status from the Council as a whole be considered.

The Borough of Poole achieved the award by meeting the four principles of the Investors in People standard:

  • commitment to invest in people
  • planning how individuals, teams and Service Units are to be developed
  • taking action to develop its people to improve performance
  • evaluating outcomes of its training and development investment for employees’ progress

Mayor of Poole, Cllr Ray Smith, said: "The Council is determined to provide the best possible service for residents in Poole and we recognise this is only achievable through our employees. For this reason we have gone through the IiP assessment process in a rigorous way. I want to congratulate everyone on their achievements being recognised today."

The Borough of Poole is committed to investing in high employment standards and recently approved a new People Strategy to support this process, a copy of the document can be obtained by contacting Sue Bennett on 01202 633465.

Notes:

The Investors in People award is the national standard which sets a level of good practice for training and development in order to achieve business goals.

The Borough of Poole has over five thousand employees, 23 Services Units and a Policy Directorate team. Poole Council now holds 25 IiP awards, this achievement means that every unit of the Borough of Poole is staffed with people who have benefited from training and development that supports the delivery of continually improved services.
