Turnaround - A New Fostering Scheme

Local young people in need of foster care are set to benefit from a new fostering scheme. TURNAROUND is the result of a partnership between Poole, Bournemouth and Dorset Social Services, Education Directorates and Dorset Health Care NHS Trust.

TURNAROUND will provide young people, Looked After by the local authority, between the ages of 10 and 16 years old with a foster home, education, a daily activities programme and intensive therapeutic intervention, for a 6-month period.

If you are thinking of changing your job, are prepared to work full-time from your home, be part of a focused and effective team, are flexible and resilient, then TURNAROND would like to hear from you. The scheme is now recruiting foster carers and pays a guaranteed fee up to £27,000 pa including paid holidays.

A spokesperson from TURNAROUND, said: "Don’t rule yourself out, call us! Just as all our young people have different needs, so do we need people with a variety of abilities and skills. Wherever you live in Dorset or the surrounding area we would like to hear from you. Call us now on 0800-195-9654.

TURNAROUND’S partnership has already been successful in winning a £400,000 grant from the Department of Health. The project was named by Sarah Hunter, from Poole’s Children & Families Unit, who won the Dorset-wide competition to name the scheme.

Foster Care Fortnight, co-ordinated by national charity the Fostering Network, starts today. During the fortnight (12 – 25 May), local authorities all over the UK are hoping to highlight the urgent need for more foster carers and to increase public understanding.

The Borough of Poole’s own fostering team offer an excellent range of support services and are also looking for local people to foster for a range of periods. Payments for skills enable some people to foster full-time, others foster part-time alongside their jobs and some until a young person is independent.

Joyce Spiller, Adoption & Fostering Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "We need a range of people to foster in order to meet our young people’s needs. You can be single or with a partner, with or without children of your own. If you are understanding and sympathetic to the needs of young people then fostering may be for you."

The team provides an excellent package of support from health, education, sessional workers, a range of access to leisure services and regular training plus 24hour access to a social worker. To find out more contact Luis Pujol on (01202) 261501.
