14 Mar 03Who is Littering our Highways?
The Borough of Poole will be cracking down on roadside litter this summer as part of its Pride in Poole campaign.
The Council will be targeting commercial vehicles, motorists and fly tippers who spoil the appearance of the major gateways into Poole.
High profile enforcement action will be taken against those individuals and businesses that carelessly and selfishly allow their waste to spoil the town. Uncovered vehicles, skip transporters and motorists who are more concerned about the neatness of their car than that of the local environment will all be targeted to bring this problem to an end.
As part of the campaign residents and visitors are being asked to ensure their waste is secure before departure and to carry a plastic bag inside their vehicle for rubbish which can then be disposed of in the litter bins provided throughout the Borough or at home.
Dealing with roadside litter is an expensive operation for the Council with increasing levels of litter creating budget and resource pressures. Specialist health and safety equipment is needed when cleansing roads with a speed limit exceeding 40mph.
Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, said: "The standard of our streets is much improved as a consequence of new methods, equipment and additional investment. However dual carriageways and some other main arterial routes into Poole are proving difficult to improve as litter on these roads continues to increase. To see a significant improvement we must reduce the amount of rubbish that is carelessly or deliberately deposited on these roads from vehicles. Prosecution is one way we can help drive this message home".
