10 Feb 03Team Chosen to Design a 'Streetscape' for Poole
The recommended team tasked with designing the future of Poole’s streets and public areas as part of the major regeneration of the Town Centre, Hamworthy and the Quay has been announced after being selected by a specialist judging panel on 6 February. Following a rigorous selection process, the specialist judging panel which included Councillors, Officers and external professionals today decided to recommend B + B UK Landscape Designers as the preferred team to take on the design of Poole’s new streetscape. The final decision will be made by the Council’s Executive on 11 March. One of four teams involved in the process, B+B UK was selected following a day of presentations, Q&A sessions and discussion. All four teams had the opportunity to demonstrate their flair for design and imagination by creating a hypothetical look for three areas of Poole, with an unlimited budget and no constraints but it was B + B UK’s ideas that stood out as the most appropriate. The team was praised for their innovative approach which showed how various aspects of Poole could be united using a common theme and dynamic vision. Their approach to engaging in consultation with residents as well as business was also appreciated by the judging panel.
The team will now spend the next five months applying their ideas to the environmental, financial and cultural considerations of Poole, ready for implementation from September 2003. Following the Executive’s approval B + B UK will begin working with the Borough’s Streetscape working group making plans for Consultation in April.

Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Portfolio Holder for Environment and Regeneration, said: "The Town Centre has long deserved a fresh outlook and this team will be able to pull together the many threads of Poole’s culture. The team working on the area have the fantastic opportunity to give Poole that extra something that will unite the old with the new ensuring that our heritage remains safe and that the new areas are comfortable and friendly places. I look forward to what the designers and public can conceive for Poole."
The Streetscape Strategy will cover all public spaces in the Regeneration areas both in Hamworthy and the West Quay Road area, as well as linking back into the existing town towards the High Street and the Quay. The renewal of the sites is designed to bring about large new areas of public space in the form of Quayside promenades, squares and spaces, waterside parks and streets with full public access at all times.
John Biggs, Team Leader for Urban Design in Poole, said: "We want to make sure the spaces are of a consistently high quality and link together both visually and physically to create a new and exciting part of town for everyone to enjoy. The panel has chosen
B + B UK to come up with innovative ideas for the area and a streetscape design manual that will ensure that all developments contribute to the overall character and atmosphere."

The South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) is providing a grant of £75,000 as part of their "Civic Pride" initiative and this has been matched by the Borough of Poole, although most of the Borough’s contribution will be made by developers working in Poole. These funds will cover the costs for B + B UK to produce a design guide for Poole. The building of the public spaces and walkways will be paid for as part of the private developments and part of B + B UK’s task will be to devise a new management process for the maintenance of the public area.
