29 Jan 03A Fresh Young Voice for Poole
On Friday 24 January the young people of Poole elected Lisa Ellaway as the new Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) for Poole. 12 candidates were put forward for election this year and during the hustings each candidate had the opportunity to give a short speech on why they should be elected. Annette Brooke MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole and Robert Syms MP for Poole gave the candidates tips on how to form popular manifestos for the electorate and the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Graham Mason spoke of his own experiences of holding office. Lisa Ellway, 16 years old from Canford Heath in Poole, served one year as Deputy to the previous MYP, Katie Riddle. On becoming Poole’s new member Lisa, said: "Friday night was an exciting and buzzing evening! It was cool meeting and talking to the elected Members and others from the Council. Becoming an MYP is good because of the competition – there were great people standing. I’m really looking forward to the year ahead." Lisa will now be the voice for the young people of Poole at the national sitting of the UK Youth Parliament as well as some of the local Council meetings she will be attending at the Civic Centre. Cllr Graham Wilson, Executive Portfolio Holder for Community Development, said: "The Youth Parliament gives young people in Poole the opportunity to talk to us on a local level about issues that directly affect them and many have strong views on a variety of important issues. Nationally it also means that there is a real force that has a right to be listened to." James Clough will act as Lisa’s Deputy and will support her in her role.
