Assessing the Environmental Impact of a New Bridge for Poole

Local residents, organisations and businesses are being asked for their views on issues to be studied as part of the environmental impact of Poole’s new bridge.

To help consultation with local residents, partners and statutory organisations such as the Environment Agency and English Nature, the Borough of Poole has produced a Scoping Report which explains how the Council intends to identify and review any potential effects of the bridge on people and the environment.

In addition, the report is designed to identify the range and type of surveys and monitoring which must be carried out to ensure any adverse effect on the environment is minimised and measures to balance the effects of the development are in place.

Cllr Bob Williams, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Regeneration, said: "Assessing the impact of the new bridge on the local environment is an essential piece of the detailed work which will be taking place over the next few months. By working with partners, key stakeholders and local people now, we will ensure that all the research needed is in place and that we get the right bridge for Poole."

Following consultation, the report will be used as a basis to carry out a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which will examine in detail the effect of the scheme on issues such as geology, quality of surface water, flora, fauna and habitats in the area.

As part of the next stage of developing plans, the Council intends to apply to the Government this summer for permission to build the new bridge under the Transport and Works Act 1992. The application will include an Environmental Statement based on the findings of the EIA.

Copies of the Scoping Report are available to view in libraries, or at Strategic Planning, Civic Centre, Borough of Poole. Alternatively the report is available on the Council’s website, boroughofpoole.com/regeneration. Any comments should be made in writing and forms are available from the Civic Centre and local libraries. Comments should be sent to Nigel Jacobs, Strategic Planning, Borough of Poole, Civic Centre, BH15 2RU by Friday 14 February 2003.

The proposed route for the new bridge will link West Quay Road with the former Power Station site in Lower Hamworthy. The Environmental Impact Study will be undertaken by Gifford, the lead consultant of the Bridge Design team appointed by the Council just before Christmas.

Copies of the Scoping Report have been sent to statutory consultees including English Nature and the Environment Agency, stakeholders and landowners. Letters advising of the consultation have been sent to all local residents groups.
