In the next few weeks planning and Conservation Officers from the Borough of Poole will be conducting a survey of advertisements and signs in the High Street and Old Town area. The High Street and Old Town are designated as conservation areas. This ensures that any potential changes or additions to the area maintain, or enhance, its character and image including applications for new shop-fronts and adverts. Peter Watson, Head of Planning Design and Control, said: "This is an important and often neglected area of planning work. Where unauthorised signs or advertisement are found we will be advising the property owners of the options available to them, as part of this exercise we hope to raise awareness of good design amongst those who can have a great deal of influence over the way our town centre looks." Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Portfolio Holder for Environment and Regeneration, said: "It is apparent that some adverts have been put up without the consent of the Council and as they are not in character with the area it is likely that they will need to be replaced. To be fair and consistent officers will be looking at the whole area to see if there are any signs which do not have the benefit of planning permission and this survey will help us to ensure that Poole remains an attractive and dynamic town." A guide for those who influence the design of shop-fronts or signs in Poole has been produced and is available, free of charge, from Planning Design and Control Services at the Civic Centre, call (01202) 633321 or e-mail planning@poole.gov.uk.
