5 Dec 02Poole Schools Improve At Key Stage 2
Poole’s 11year olds have made significant improvements in their writing and maths skills according to results of the National Curriculum Assessments that took place in Poole schools last May.
Some examples of results are:
- Writing has seen the largest improvement, increasing by 8% at level 4 equalling the national figure of 60%
- Writing at level 5 increased by 50% meeting the national average at this stage of 17%
- Maths improved by 3% at level 4 reaching 67%
- English 73% is the same as last year at level 4
- Science dropped 1% to 85%
Although overall national performance at Key Stage 2 has seen very substantial improvement in recent years, the original targets for summer 2002 were not achieved at national level nor in many LEAs, including Poole. There is, therefore, a need to focus on the way in which the LEA can work with schools to secure further improvement in performance especially at Key Stage 2.
Kevin Manley, Acting Chief Education Officer, said: "Headteachers, teachers and support- staff in our schools are already working hard to meet a variety of challenges supported by their Governing Bodies. Our priority now will be to re-focus our efforts on areas identified for improvement in both school and LEA development plans so that these efforts can quickly bear fruit. We look forward to seeing Poole pupils and schools building on their success so that next year’s results show a clear improvement."
Notes:
The Key Stage Assessments have been in place for a number of years and provide important information on the improvement of pupils’ and schools’ performance over time. The testing arrangements also provide benchmarks and targets for schools and LEAs in terms of further improvements.
