We Made A Difference!

The local community of Alderney came out in force on Saturday 26 October, in support of Poole’s Make A Difference Day.

As part of the Borough’s Pride in Poole campaign for environmental enhancement, Poole Council teamed up with Dorset Police, Dorset Probation Service, Poole & Bournemouth Youth Offending Team and the community of Alderney to help free the local environment of litter, graffiti, and overgrown vegetation.

A total of 3 skips were packed full of rubbish and many unlikely items including an old twin pushchair, tyres, a doll’s head and part of a boat trailer.

The Community Service team worked hard to remove overgrown vegetation, cutting back brambles and overhanging branches.  Also removed were large quantities of broken glass and other sharp objects.

Hundreds of bulbs where planted amongst the communal areas of the estate ready for a burst of colour next Spring. County Pride, a local company who volunteered their services, begun work on the Youth Centre to remove graffiti.

Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole, said: "By developing partnerships with other agencies, Pride in Poole aims to work with local communities to improve Poole’s environment and help sustain these improvements for the future."

The event was generously supported by Parrs Confectionery, Tesco, AFC Bournemouth’s mascots Cherry Bear and McDonalds restaurant who donated kids meal vouchers in recognition of the efforts made by local children supporting the day.

Cllr Charles Meachin, Alderney Ward, said: "This day was a great success and it was really encouraging to see so many local people, especially children, working hard to make a difference. Some splendid work was done on the day and I hope that we will see more successes across the community in the future - a big thank you to all those involved."
