New Nursery in Bearwood Opens

A brand new nursery at Bearwood Primary School will open on Tuesday 15 October.

The first in Bearwood to open five days a week, the nursery will offer a much needed service in the area providing free education for 3 year olds. Bearwood Primary and Nursery School will be the fourth in Poole to offer this service to its local community and is already very popular with local families who had previously only been able to get access to part-time nurseries.

Wendy Govan, Headteacher, Bearwood Primary School, said: "Our nursery is an exciting place for young children to learn, work and play together in a homely environment. It will provide a flexible and enjoyable framework for their education and can gently introduce them to school life."

The spacious nursery was developed with the Early Years Partnership and has been fitted with new furniture and equipment plus a cloakroom, kitchen, office, storerooms and a secure outdoor play area. Children attending the nursery do so for 5 sessions a week and are paid for by a nursery grant. Children that wish to attend must be aged 3 by 31 August in the school year before Year One.

Cllr Mrs Jane James, Chair of Governors, said: "This is a great facility enabling families in Bearwood to make excellent use of a full school week, preparing Poole youngsters for fun, friends and learning. The Council has worked closely with Bearwood Primary in setting up this nursery and it is an excellent investment for the future."

The School was recently awarded the Basic Skills Agency "Quality Mark" which recognises the high quality of teaching not only in basic skills but also in overall school improvement. Bearwood Primary and Nursery School can now provide both years of the Foundation Curriculum in one setting, this will help with the children’s introduction to learning and the school environment.

The Poole Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership (EYDC Partnership) brings together a wide range of individuals and organisations, including the local authority, with an interest in early years education and childcare. The EYDC Partnership seeks to develop and support new and existing facilities to ensure that the needs and interests of children and their families in the Borough of Poole are met. The Partnership is responsible for drawing up the EYDC plan in accordance with the guidance issued by the Department of Education and Skills and which supports the overall community strategy of the Borough.

The children will follow the Foundation Curriculum, a two year curriculum for children under five years designed to prepare them for Primary School learning. The emphasis is on social and communication skills in very practical, play settings that help children learn work and play together effectively.

The nursery at Bearwood Primary and Nursery School will be run by highly qualified staff, Sally Wall, senior teacher specialising in Early years Education and Sarah Allen, Nursery Nurse from Heathlands Nursery. The nursery will also be run with help from volunteers.
