A new European Long Distance Walk was launched in Poole on Saturday 21 September. The Mayors of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch joined other distinguished guests at a special ceremony to celebrate the opening of the E9 route.
Sir John Johnson the President of the Long Distance Walkers Association and Mr Jan Havelka the President of the European Ramblers Association unveiled a commemorative plaque in the gardens between Shore Road and Banks Road.
The UK part of the route runs between Plymouth and Dover. The section between Milford on Sea and Poole will link the Solent Way to the South West Coast Path. The European part runs from Cape St Vincent, going along the coast of Northern France, with ferry links to the UK, and eventually reaching the Estonia/Russian border, covering 5,000km in all.
Sally Funnell the Cycling/Walking Officer with the Borough of Poole said "The E9 path in Poole is along the sea front and links up with the South West Coast Path via the Sanbanks ferry. European visitors will be able to follow the special signs from Poole ferryport."
