In Town But Not In Car

Poole’s TRAVELWISE team are encouraging local people to leave their cars at home and use more environmentally and economically beneficial transport, if only for just one day.

On 22 September, as part of an international day of awareness, the TRAVELWISE team will be promoting ‘In Town Without My Car’ day. To help provide quieter streets, cleaner air, and less noise, local people will be encouraged to use public transport and car-sharing schemes instead of relying on their car.

Kathy Saunders, TRAVELWISE Team Leader at the Borough of Poole, said: "We don’t expect people to give up their cars completely, for many that would simply be impractical. All we are asking is that people consider other forms of transport and to try and cut back on their car use, even if this is for only one day a month!"

Cllr Bob William’s, Portfolio Holder for Environment & Regeneration, said: "It’s a simple idea but one that yields massive benefits, a small change to make a big difference. We are often asking for ways that we can help preserve the environment and this is a very effective way to do so." He added: "Walking part of the way to your destination would benefit the environment, your pocket and your heart - a 10 minute walk could help contribute to a healthier lifestyle and it’s also far less stressful to walk through Poole Park than it is to drive round it!"
