Local Stone Brought To Life In Ancient Art

For the next two weeks, people in Poole will be able to witness talented, local carvers creating works of art in the beautiful, recently restored herb garden, at the rear of Scaplen’s Court Museum, Lower High Street, Poole.

From Saturday 10 August to Saturday 24 August, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, people can enter this event free of charge and enjoy the magical surroundings of Scaplen’s Court. At least two carvers will be demonstrating their skills and answering questions each day between 10am and 4pm.

Graham Wilson, Executive Spokesperson for Community Development, said: "It is not often that the public have an opportunity to see such a specialised craft in action, this unique venue will be open to anyone who wants to come along and appreciate not just the place but the lovely work that is going on there."

Using a variety of styles and techniques, Paul Davis, Jean Hartley, Sarah Moore and Jonathan Sells will be working with locally extracted stone to bring to life an exciting range of carvings themed around the Medieval period.

Steven MacLaurin, Arts in the Community Officer, Culture and Community Learning, said: "This event enables people to view close up the skills involved in creating these intricate pieces of artwork. Typical of this era are the funny and usually grotesque Gargoyles, which can be seen high up on the ancient buildings around us. It is a great opportunity for visitors to interact with some of Dorset’s most talented Carvers."

The event was arranged to enable people to gain knowledge of an art that was commonplace in the Medieval period, to promote good craftsmanship and to encourage people to make use of and enjoy the lovely Garden’s and Museum.

Scaplen's Court was built during the Medieval period and the garden was designed by the eminent landscape gardener George Dilliston.

Scaplen’s Court Museum, The Gardens and The Waterfront Museum are free to enter and situated by the Quay at the end of Lower High Street, Poole. For further information please telephone: (01202) 262600
