Poole Park and Ride

Extra funding to support the development Park & Ride was discussed at a meeting of Poole's Executive last night.

Following consultation with residents on issues such as access, traffic calming, landscaping and security, the Executive has recommended an extra £235,000 (15%) funding is used to support:

  • £75,000 for a new roundabout, control barriers and CCTV
  • £70,000 for increases in construction costs
  • £15,000 for modifications to the design to minimise impact on local residents such as screening of properties adjacent to the site
  • £25,000 for the bus entrance off the dual carriageway
  • £15,000 for further consultation and engaging consultants to provide expert advice and examine the design of the scheme
  • £14,000 for branding of the Park & Ride bus service

Cllr Bob Williams, Executive Spokesperson for Environment & Regeneration, said: "Whilst I'm disappointed that it will cost us more than we thought, Park and Ride is one of the major ways we can help to ease traffic congestion and retain a vibrant Town Centre. Nationally and regionally it has proved to be a success in helping to improve life in town centres. Not only can it reduce traffic on our roads, it is also a major way we can help local businesses which contribute £43million in taxes every year and those working in the town with affordable options for all day parking. By providing alternatives I believe we can provide the best balance which will meet the needs of the town, residents and businesses."

The decision on the funding will be discussed and decided at the next meeting of full Council on 30 July.
