22 Sep 03In Town, Without My Car!
Once again the Borough of Poole’s Travelwise team are getting ready to make Poole a healthier, less polluted place to be with their ‘In Town, without my Car!’ day on Monday 22nd September The day, which will be opened by the Mayor, Councillor Ray Smith, will see the lower High Street in Poole closed to cars from 10.00am until 6.00pm giving the whole day a real feel of stepping back in time to a life before cars. Playing to a backdrop of feet tapping music, there will be lots to enjoy on the day as Lush will be giving away free samples of handmade cosmetics; Truly Scrumptious will be tempting us with delicious confectionery; River Cottage Foods will the there; Grand Master Wines, Dorset Farmers’ Market, Chestnut Nurseries, Antiques and Art Demonstrations, Dorset Cyclists’ Network, Dorset County Association for the Blind and Dorset Wildlife Trust. With the focus on health and travel there will be a chance to get your blood pressure checked and Action Bikes will be offering the chance to check the health of your bicycle. Teresa Brown, Borough Of Poole’s Travel Awareness Officer, said: "In Town, without my Car has always gained lots of recognition in and around the Borough and I am sure this year will be no different. We hope that people will come along and enjoy the day which all helps to raise awareness and promote the idea of leaving the car at home. We are confident that the day will be a great success and that everyone will benefit in some positive way." Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation Services, said; "There will be a real festival atmosphere with locals and visitors being free to roam the streets of Poole remembering a slower and healthier pace of life. If we are to preserve our environment we must all do our bit and by taking the time to really think about alternative methods of travelling we can begin to make a small difference that has the opportunity to be developed into something much more."
. The day is an international event and with only three weeks to go, people in Poole are being invited to join in and think of new ways to travel around the area.
